How to tell if your popcorn ceiling has asbestos

Textured "popcorn" ceilings were the default finish in Calgary homes from the 1960s well into the 1990s. The texture hid imperfections, dampened sound — and, for much of that period, commonly contained asbestos. If you're planning to scrape yours, stop and read this first.

The age test (your first clue)

• Built or textured before ~1990: assume asbestos is possible. It was legal and common in Canadian texture products through the 1980s.
• Built after the early 1990s: much less likely, but renovations reused old stock — age alone isn't proof either way.

Colour, texture style, and how the ceiling looks tell you nothing. Asbestos fibres are microscopic; identical-looking ceilings can test opposite ways.

What NOT to do

• Don't scrape a patch "to see what's under there" — dry-scraping asbestos texture is exactly how fibres go airborne
• Don't sand, drill, or hang heavy fixtures through it before testing
• Don't hire a painter or handyman who offers to remove it without a test — in Alberta, disturbing asbestos-containing material falls under OHS rules

Testing: quick, cheap, definitive

If it's negative

Standard renovation work. Removal is a wet-scrape job priced per square foot at normal renovation rates, followed by skim-coating and paint prep.

If it's positive

The room is sealed with poly containment and negative air, the texture is wetted and removed under controlled conditions, waste goes to an approved facility, and the area is cleaned and cleared before containment comes down. It costs more than a standard scrape — but done properly, it's a routine, safe job.
